Small Travelers Cause Big Disruption

American Airlines passenger Osac Summer reacted to a viral video showing family members placing a child in a $300 seat without prior permission.

“Stay in your lane and seat,” Summer told his family in a TikTok clip on July 6th.

The 6-foot-2 passenger, who had his backpack securely stored overhead, was filmed insisting on his assigned seat.

“I don’t care about your daughter or your kids,” Summer expressed. “I paid for this.” He had intentionally selected aisle seats for comfort and to avoid issues, as he noted in a reaction video he shared on TikTok on July 11th.

“If you know me, you know I haven’t disappeared,” he remarked. “It’s just… I didn’t cause a scene for that.” He maintained that he wasn’t the villain in this situation, expressing frustration that his family claimed his seat without asking.

Summer mentioned the family even attempted to move him to a middle or window seat, which he wasn’t comfortable with.

He recounted an interaction with a flight attendant, saying, “I told the woman, ‘Ma’am, I really don’t want to sit with you and your kids, but it would have been nice if you asked before taking my seat.’” He insisted that had they communicated first, he would’ve gladly moved to another seat, but the demands made him rush to find an aisle seat.

Reports suggested that the flight attendant declined to let him select his preferred location.

“The attendant indicated, ‘Yeah, you’re in the matter,’” Summer stated. “I told her, ‘You just admitted it, it’s rude to take my seat.’” Many other travelers chimed in, agreeing that families should not be able to swap seats without permission.

“I’m not trying to argue… I just wanted to sit down,” he said, clearly agitated by the whole situation. “It was chaotic; we just wanted to board the plane in peace.” Eventually, another passenger moved their child out of Summer’s designated seat.

He concluded in a follow-up video, “The lesson here: just ensure people return to their assigned seats. And really, flight attendants should handle this better; if it were a first-class passenger, they wouldn’t let the seat change go so easily.”

Following the incident, Summer noted that only one flight attendant came by to check on him.

This event caught the attention of American Airlines, who were contacted for comments.

In recent years, airline passengers have pushed back against parents attempting to swap seats with strangers. A Brazilian woman went viral in December 2024 after refusing to give up her seat for a crying child, leading her to sue GOL Airlines as well as the passenger who filmed her. She sought compensation due to the incident affecting her personal and professional life.

In contrast, women were celebrated in 2023 for standing firm against giving up their children’s first-class seats.
