The brother of slain Tejano icon Selena Quintanilla-Perez lashed out at a depressed audience at the San Antonio Music Festival last weekend, telling the booing crowd to “boo you for not being in the show.” I said it out loud.
AB Quintanilla issued an apology on Instagram, which he later deleted, after lashing out at a fan during AB Quintanilla Y Los Kumbia Kings All Starz’s final headlining performance at music festival Tejano Explosion 2024 on Saturday.
In a post that has since been deleted, Quintanilla claimed that the cause of his now viral outburst was that he did not take medication ordered by his doctor. According to KSAT.
The 60-year-old musician was visibly upset on Saturday by the audience’s alleged lack of excitement, eventually telling the crowd: “Someone is going to put a gun to your head and say, “Come here tonight.” It’s like forcing them to do that.”
“We’ve worked so hard for years to bring you hits and you come here and you can’t even raise your hands and clap and be happy, hey, that’s even for us. It’s sad for me too,” Quintanilla said in the clip, adding, “I’m going to take my music somewhere else.”
And Quintanilla has vowed that this will be the last time he performs at a Tejano music event.
“I came all the way from Las Vegas and got love from over there. I’m back home in San Antonio, Texas, and I don’t get any fucking love here. That’s not good. That is unacceptable,” he said.
He then advised festivalgoers not to support Tejano music the same way they support the Dallas Cowboys, to immediate boos.
“You guys should support your band, just like you support the Dallas Cowboys, who lose every year. And Tejano music,” he said.
“Boo all you want, I don’t care as long as it doesn’t affect me. Boo all you want. Boo for not participating in the show.”
Quintanilla’s anger seemed to fade as the show continued, citing the musicians he met during his career, citing his sister, Tejano legend Selena Quintanilla Perez, who was brutally murdered in 1995. I reminisced.
“So all those guys who stuck up their middle fingers and left? God bless you. I hope nothing bad happens to them,” Quintanilla said in another TikTok. “Those people aren’t real fans, dude.”
Two people were shot to death and four others were injured as the festival ended Sunday morning, just minutes from San Antonio’s Historic Market Square.
A police officer near the stage heard gunshots and saw an 18-year-old man run away just after midnight. Another officer then witnessed a man fire, striking a 20-year-old man.
Police then fired several shots at the 18-year-old, who was pronounced dead at the scene, KSAT reported.
The 20-year-old man was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Four women who were present were also shot dead.
It was not immediately clear whether they were shot by the suspect or by police.
