NBA Fanbase Research Reveals Surprising Insights

It’s pretty common for basketball enthusiasts to give each other grief about their teams. With some recent data surfacing, fans now possess the ammunition of statistics to support their jabs—though it may not paint a flattering picture.

According to the data analyzed by Action Network, a review of over 1.6 million comments from NBA fan pages on Reddit reveals that Philadelphia 76ers fans rank at the top of the charts for both negativity and abusive commentary.

Remarkably, over 10.5% of comments made by 76ers fans included swear words, which is almost two percentage points higher than those from the second and third most foul-mouthed groups—Houston Rockets and Atlanta Hawks fans. In fact, they’re the only fanbase to cross the 10% threshold.

But that’s not all. Philadelphia fans were also found to be the most negative, with an astonishing 31.67% of their comments categorized as such. The Rockets fans were again second, followed by the Orlando Magic fans.

Some recent conversations among 76ers fans highlight their feelings about the team. One fan shared an email sent to the team expressing frustration over the ownership of the franchise, declaring they wouldn’t fund what they called a “laughing piece” of a team. “I’m not going to put my hard-earned money into someone else’s pocket…I cannot in good conscience contribute financially to this garbage,” the fan remarked.

Meanwhile, some fans circulated a meme featuring 76ers player Kelly Oubre, in which he uses colorful language during a confrontation with the Los Angeles Clippers.

One spokesperson from Action Network noted, “After analyzing over 1.6 million fan comments across all 30 NBA team subreddits in the past year, it’s evident that the 76ers have the most foul-mouthed and negative fandom.”

Interestingly, the Utah Jazz fans came out on the other end of the spectrum. Only 5.2% of their comments contained abusive language, showing a stark contrast to the 76ers. They were labeled the most positive NBA fans, with roughly 53% of their remarks being upbeat. They were joined by Brooklyn Nets, Washington Wizards, and Indiana Pacers fans, all of whom showed more positivity than negativity in their comments.

This analysis sheds light on both ends of the emotional spectrum among NBA fanbases. The intensity of Philadelphia fans might be seen as relentless passion, while the more measured applause from Jazz fans suggests a different kind of dedication. I guess it goes to show just how varied the experience of being an NBA fan can be.
