Tomlin’s Future with Steelers Uncertain Amid Speculation
Mike Tomlin’s time with the Steelers might be running out, but it’s unclear whether he’ll jump to another team.
As the Steelers push for a playoff spot, chatter has surfaced about his potential dismissal following a loss to the Ravens on Sunday night in the AFC North.
This situation is quite tricky. Although many franchises may be eager to acquire a coach with a championship pedigree, ESPN analyst Peter Schrager hinted that Tomlin might actually be more inclined to pursue a career in broadcasting.
“Having worked at Fox, NFL Network, and now ESPN, Tomlin has the option to earn a substantial income sharing football insights, whether in a booth or on a comfortable set,” Schrager commented on ESPN recently.
On the flip side, Tomlin could consider other coaching positions that open up.
At 53 years old, he has been a prominent figure in the coaching scene, especially in recent years as the Steelers frequently contend for the playoffs but struggle to secure crucial wins.
Back in 2021, when asked about his interest in the USC head coaching role, Tomlin famously remarked, “There aren’t any backers with big enough blank checks.”
Al Michaels once expressed that Tomlin would be an ideal addition to the NFL broadcasting team, noting his extensive knowledge and intelligence.
This Sunday, the Steelers (9-7) face off against the Ravens in a pivotal “Sunday Night Football” matchup that will serve as the AFC North championship game. The victor secures a playoff spot, while the loser’s season comes to a close.
John Harbaugh, the Ravens’ coach, is in a similar predicament as Tomlin, with both having faced high expectations due to their teams’ impressive talent.
If either coach is let go, there will likely be a flurry of interest from teams on “Black Monday,” the day when coaches often get dismissed at the end of the season. Teams like the Giants and Titans are expected to search for new leadership this offseason.
