Kyrsten Sinema’s New Role as MAHA Advocate and Psychedelic Supporter
Kyrsten Sinema has returned to the political stage, now championing the MAHA movement and advocating for psychedelic therapies. A former Democratic senator who switched to being an independent, she’s often clashed with left-leaning progressives. During President Biden’s time in office, she made headlines for breaking party lines and forging bipartisan alliances, even earning the respect of figures like Mitch McConnell. Back in 2021, she faced protests in a restroom for her stance against Biden’s Build Back Better proposal.
In a recent interview with Politico, Sinema shared her thoughts on the MAHA initiative, expressing surprise at the resistance from some of her colleagues. “I mean, is it really that controversial to want natural foods without harmful chemicals? Who wouldn’t want that?” she pondered, even as she admitted a new enthusiasm for ibogaine, a psychedelic she hopes will gain FDA approval for mental health treatment.
Sinema mentioned a “close” partnership with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., calling him a “disruptor” as they discuss the potential for psychedelics in medicine. Her optimism about advancements in this area seems genuine, which is refreshing, considering the broader political landscape.
On the topic of bipartisanship, she critiqued the current Democratic limitations in collaborating with Republicans, highlighting how, while many decry the state of democracy, there’s a missed opportunity for pragmatic solutions. Instead of labeling the previous Trump administration as authoritarian, she opted for the term “disruptive,” which perhaps reflects a more nuanced view of governance.
“People may feel strongly about this administration—whether positively or negatively—but there’s a chance for change,” Sinema remarked, encouraging a focus on potential rather than past grievances. It’s an interesting perspective, one that illustrates her complex position in today’s political discourse.
