Brian Kelly’s Tenure at LSU Comes to an End
After a notable career with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Brian Kelly has embarked on a new journey within the Southeastern Conference. He signed a significant 10-year contract with LSU in December 2021, taking on the role of head coach with the aim of securing a national championship for the renowned football program.
Looking back at his predecessors—Ed Orgeron, Les Miles, and Nick Saban—it’s hard to ignore that they all celebrated national titles after their fourth seasons. Unfortunately, Kelly couldn’t pivot the Tigers towards a College Football Playoff berth, and his fourth year ended abruptly. On Sunday, LSU’s Athletic Director Scott Woodward announced the decision to part ways with Kelly.
Interestingly, Woodward himself was dismissed shortly after facing backlash from Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry.
In the wake of Kelly’s controversial exit, many connected to LSU have shared their perspectives. Although he managed to achieve double-digit wins in his first two seasons, both current and former players have expressed concerns about his selective approach to engagement and difficulty in building strong connections.
LSU is now on the lookout for a new athletic director following Kelly’s dismissal.
An anonymous group of LSU staff pointed out to a publication that Kelly sometimes struggled to remember his players’ full names. One staff member mentioned, “Rivals would use that against us: ‘He’ll never talk to you guys. He doesn’t even know the players’ names.’”
Reports also indicate that Kelly’s coaching style may have disrupted the existing culture at LSU, highlighting a lack of understanding regarding the distinctions between SEC dynamics and the environment he thrived in at Notre Dame. An LSU official remarked, “He really stripped away the culture of what this place is. You know this place is not regular.”
A representative for Kelly did not respond for comment.
In what was a typically electric Tiger Stadium, it was unusual to witness such emptiness by the final quarter of LSU’s significant loss to Texas A&M last Saturday. Following this, Kelly met with Woodward and then addressed the players as well.
