‘A Coup Is Still a Coup’

Maureen Dowd, The New York Timespenned a sarcastic op-ed criticizing Democratic Party rhetoric about democracy following the “coup” against President Joe Biden.

Published on Saturday column Maureen Dowd’s article highlights how senior Democratic officials, from Barack Obama to Nancy Pelosi, have worked behind the scenes to pressure Biden into withdrawal, potentially creating hostility ahead of next week’s Democratic National Convention (DNC).

“It wasn’t exactly a Julius Caesar-type event in Rehoboth Beach, but it was a seismic shift and of course there were serious repercussions. While it was the right thing to do, it was an incredible coup because it means Joe Biden will not be able to campaign, much less serve as president in a fully vigorous manner for the next four years,” she wrote.

Dowd noted that after Biden’s approval ratings plummeted, Democrats began to panic and fear that former President Donald Trump would win in a landslide. Biden resisted calls to withdraw, but eventually conceded after Barack Obama, Hakeem Jeffries and Nancy Pelosi worked behind the scenes to pressure donors to freeze their money. When Biden finally caved in, those same Democrats tried to save face by praising his record and hailing his decision as an act of bravery, with Nancy Pelosi even saying Biden should be buried on Mount Rushmore. Dowd said none of this would ease the tensions that had just erupted.

There was no friendship there. Biden didn’t care about what Pelosi told Jen Psaki, the “three generations of love” her family has for Biden.

President Joe was already angry that President Obama had pushed him aside for Hillary, but he was also angry that Hillary had squandered that opportunity and lost to Trump. President Obama was quietly trying to do everything he could to protect his sainthood, but President Joe was furious that President Obama had pushed him aside twice.

Ron Klain, a longtime Biden adviser, later told Anderson Cooper that the president believed he won the nomination fair and square.

“It’s unfortunate because I think the president won the nomination fair and square,” Klain said. “Fourteen million people voted for him and his running mate for vice president.”

“You know, I think the president was forced to back down because of pressure from elected officials and donors to back down, and I think that was wrong,” he added.

Dowd ended his column on a cheeky note, satirically highlighting the irony behind a political party that has been stoking fears about the loss of democracy since 2020.

“Those who ousted Biden should be proud: they saved him and their party from a likely crushing defeat and allowed Trump to return to power and tarnish our democracy,” she concluded.
