A Democratic Activist Facing Prostate Cancer

New Challenges for Biden Amid Cancer Diagnosis

In 2015, Joe Biden endured the heartbreaking loss of his eldest son to a brain tumor. Fast forward to now, the 82-year-old former president is under scrutiny regarding his mental and physical capabilities as he prepares to hand over the White House to his opponent, Donald Trump. Adding to the pressure, Biden is now facing his own health battle.

His office confirmed on Sunday that he has been diagnosed with an “aggressive” form of prostate cancer that has spread to his bones, and he is currently exploring treatment options.

Biden’s ambition was to leave a mark in history as the leader who rescued America from the Trump era by winning the 2020 presidential race. He managed to navigate a nation fractured by the COVID-19 pandemic and Trump’s chaotic first term, pushing through significant legislation along the way.

However, his presidency is now overshadowed by his opponent’s looming shadow. A critical decision regarding his age and the choice to seek re-election in 2024 has sparked concerns.

For many observers, a defining moment of Biden’s presidency was his underwhelming performance in a debate against Trump, which some suggest may have contributed to his exit from the race.

Vice President Kamala Harris, Biden’s Democratic successor, now faces an uphill battle in preventing Trump from reclaiming power.

Biden often asserts that he successfully defeated his Republican rival, but doubts about his physical and cognitive health have intensified, especially following the release of “The Original Crime: President Biden’s Decline, Its Cover-up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again.” This scrutiny has only grown with the recent release of an audio recording from October 2023, where Biden struggles to recall important details.

Challenges Ahead

Biden’s inauguration in January 2021 marked a notable comeback for a leader often underestimated, having navigated both political strife and personal loss throughout his life. Yet, even then, he seemed an unlikely hero.

As the oldest president in U.S. history at that point, he became well-known for his frequent gaffes and, of course, as Barack Obama’s vice president.

His term included a significant milestone: the appointment of the country’s first Black, South Asian, and female vice president. This came alongside a renewed commitment to international alliances, which Trump had previously disregarded, but many issues remained unresolved.

Hurdles for Re-election

Early in 2021, Biden’s approval ratings plummeted following a chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan, and by the latest CNN polling, his ratings hovered around 36%.

Amid rising inflation partly linked to pandemic relief programs, his approval has struggled, negatively affecting Harris in polls. Additionally, his more lenient border policies led to record levels of illegal immigration—a major talking point for Trump.

Biden often shares nostalgic tales of his childhood as a working-class Irish Catholic in Pennsylvania, echoing his father’s sayings. He has weathered personal tragedies, including a car accident in 1972 that took the lives of his wife and infant daughter just days after he was elected to the Senate at age 29, as well as the loss of his son Bo in 2015 to cancer amidst Hunter’s struggles with addiction.

The Reality of Age

But age is a challenge he’s finding difficult to overcome. Trump has labeled him “Sleepy Joe,” and social media has widely circulated his missteps, whether tripping up the steps to Air Force One or falling from his bike.

The White House has been adamant there are no issues, suggesting they were circumspect in managing Biden’s public image until it may have been too late.

Biden had a brief moment of high-ground during Trump’s final days in office, but his farewell speech raised concerns amid a broader context of uncertainty.
