Since the Democratic Party lost the White House in November, its leadership has been notably fragmented. As they find their way through President Donald Trump’s second term, some unexpected partnerships have emerged.
The party’s response to Trump’s policies—spanning from protests in Los Angeles to the defense of contentious deportees—has attracted criticism not only from conservatives but also from within their own ranks.
1. Protests Against ICE
In the midst of chaos in Los Angeles, President Trump described those protesting against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as “troublemakers and rebels” rather than genuine demonstrators.
This past weekend, protests escalated with cars set ablaze, attracting significant media coverage. Trump went further by labeling the National Guard’s actions as a historic shutdown by the federal government, marking the first such occurrence since 1965. In light of this, Democrats rallied behind anti-ICE demonstrators, fueled by thoughts of potential presidential candidate California Governor Gavin Newsom.
Governor Newsom stated, “This blatant abuse of power by a sitting president has ignited a tense environment that jeopardizes our people, officers, and the National Guard.”
Senator Cory Booker noted that many of the protests were “stirred up by chaos promoted by the president,” while Senator Alex Padilla shared that most of the demonstrators were passionate and peaceful.
2. Kilmer Abrego Garcia’s Case
Salvadoran national Kilmer Abrego Garcia, who faced deportation from Maryland earlier this year, is expected to face federal charges, as announced by Attorney General Pam Bondy. The situation has led Democrats to criticize the Trump administration for returning him to a high-security prison in El Salvador.
Senator Chris Van Hollen faced backlash after being seen relaxing with a margarita while visiting Garcia in El Salvador, which didn’t sit well with many on social media.
Van Hollen asserted, “This isn’t just about one individual; it’s about constitutional rights. The administration needs to assert this in court.” Garcia has been linked to the violent gang MS-13 and stands accused of harassment against his spouse, according to court records.
Maryland Governor Wes Moore praised the efforts to uphold the rule of law during these proceedings.
3. Vandalism at Tesla Locations
This year, incidents of vandalism at Tesla showrooms and vehicles drew little criticism from Democrats. Attorney General Pam Bondy described these attacks as “domestic terrorism.” What began as a protest against Elon Musk escalated into violence, with reports of gunshots and property damage.
During an interview, Musk claimed that the hostile rhetoric of Democratic leaders contributed to this rise in violence against his business.
Senator John Fetterman has taken a different approach, challenging his fellow Democrats for previously criticizing Musk yet now considering a return to support as tensions ease.
4. Mahmoud Khalil’s Situation
Trump discussed on Fox News the Democratic Party’s losses, criticizing their support of groups like Hamas. He noted that supporting Khalil might not be as scandalous as backing more serious criminals.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused Khalil of engaging in anti-Semitic protests, further complicating the narrative.
Despite the accusations, over 100 Democrats signaled their disapproval of the administration’s approach, claiming it was an abuse of government power to suppress dissent against the president.
Prominent figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and members of the “squad” have labeled Khalil’s detention a violation of his First Amendment rights, amplifying calls for his release.
5. Leadership Challenges
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer recently faced backlash from his own party for voting with Republicans on a resolution aimed at preventing government shutdowns. Following this vote, his favorability among New York voters reportedly dipped significantly.
In contrast, Ocasio-Cortez’s popularity surged amid speculation regarding her aspirations for higher office. Some party members expressed concerns that Schumer’s actions could jeopardize future elections.
Recent tightening within the Democratic National Committee (DNC) saw figures like David Hogg, initially poised to challenge older party members, ultimately decide against it after internal conflicts.
The DNC’s stance on Trump remains clear; they believe he’s lost credibility among Americans and that Democrats are far from defeated, noting their recent electoral victories.
