Last year, there was a remarkable event involving a garbage truck driver in Chicago who, while legally carrying a concealed weapon, managed to thwart a robbery attempt. In the process, he ended up fatally shooting one of the two robbers and injuring the other.
As Chicago police reported, the incident happened around 5:15 a.m. on January 31, 2025, not far from a local high school in Homan Square. The details revealed that a 28-year-old garbage truck driver was outside when two men approached, displayed a firearm, and attempted to rob him.
According to CWB Chicago, the robbers were identified as Aaron White and Kenneth Elliott. They confronted the driver near his truck in an alley adjacent to DRW College Prep. They even managed to capture surveillance footage that illustrated the unfolding events.
The situation escalated quickly when White, wielding the gun, approached the driver. Video evidence suggests that the driver attempted to fend off White by pushing his gun aside with his arm while simultaneously grappling with Elliott. Clearly, they had chosen the wrong target that day.
Authorities confirmed that the driver held a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification card and a Concealed Carry License, which he decided to utilize. This became evident when White extended the gun again, prompting the driver to fire at least three rounds, hitting White, who collapsed on the ground. Despite being injured, Elliott continued to engage with the driver until more shots were exchanged, eventually bringing him down as well.
In the aftermath, police discovered White laying near the school with a gunshot wound to the neck. Remarkably, even while injured, he managed to communicate that he was lying on a firearm. Officers later secured the gun from under him. Sadly, Elliott was shot in the head and declared dead at the scene.
Following the incident, it was reported that White recently pleaded guilty to attempted armed robbery with a firearm. Consequently, Judge Domenica Stephenson handed him an eight-year prison sentence.
One viewer remarked on a news video that it was compelling to see “the garbage collector disposing of more than just regular trash,” humorously implying that he contributed to eliminating societal issues.
