Even with the backlash from European media and politicians about the U.S. hosting the majority of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, one German fan seems unfazed.
A user on X, known as freddy, has gained millions of likes and views for sharing his adventures across the U.S., praising the kindness of locals, the culture, and everyday venues like Waffle House, Buc-ee’s, Taco Bell, and Bass Pro Shops.
Freddy’s posts have gained great popularity as they counter the narrative from some on the left claiming the U.S. is an unwelcoming, culturally barren zone, unsafe for international visitors due to stringent immigration regulations.
During a recent episode of “The Steve Diace Show,” host Diace and guest Jill Savage, a conservative commentator, discussed how this European fan’s joy is bringing people together in America.
“Freddie is such a heartwarming summer story,” Jill remarked.
“I’m just in awe of Freddie. He unites people, regardless of their political affiliations. It feels like the conflict has subsided. Freddie is busy exploring America. … He embodies the joy of summer,” she laughed, admitting her indifference to soccer or the World Cup.
What Freddie managed to do, she explains, is challenge the pervasive idea that “America is terrible, Americans are unpleasant people, and we should emulate Europe instead.”
Instead of spreading negativity, Americans have embraced Freddie warmly. He received shout-outs from celebs like J.J. Watt, an invite to the White House, emergency travel assistance from American Airlines for game timings, and an invitation to a concert with backstage access from country artist Ella Langley—making him an instant American favorite.
“Jill acknowledged on-air that soccer and the German fans unite the country more than college football or baseball,” noted her co-host.
“We thought this would be a ‘white man’s summer’—but now it’s a ‘Euro summer’,” Diace joked.
