AJ Brown’s Future with the Eagles in Question

After a tumultuous season filled with sideline altercations, AJ Brown’s time with the Philadelphia Eagles seems uncertain. Coach Nick Sirianni has indicated that there’s “no guarantee” Brown will be with the team by 2026, which likely suggests that the Eagles are preparing to part ways with their frustrated wide receiver. It’s understandable, really—Philadelphia needs a solid NFL receiver, and although Brown is still hitting 1,000 yards and performing at a high level, issues stemming from financial commitments complicate any potential move.

Brown signed a hefty three-year, $96 million contract extension in April 2024, which now carries a cap hit of $23.4 million for next season. Such financial obligations make it tricky for the Eagles to let him go easily. They face an uphill battle with the $84 million guaranteed in his deal, which essentially locks them in until at least June 1st. If they were to trade him now, they’d take a $20 million hit against the cap, whereas waiting would save them $7 million.

This means that the solution might not come any time soon. Sirianni’s choice of words, “can’t guarantee,” hints that the team isn’t actively seeking a replacement for Brown at this moment. Nevertheless, we can look ahead to teams that desperately need receiver assistance and consider where AJ Brown might end up come summer.

One prime destination seems obvious: Foxboro. The New England Patriots are in dire need of receiving talent beyond just Stefon Diggs, who is currently facing serious charges but maintains his innocence. When discussing potential fits for Brown, the Patriots stand out as a near-perfect match. They utilize a vertical passing game—just the kind of offense Brown thrives in. Plus, with $38 million available in cap space after drafting, there’s plenty of flexibility for a significant acquisition. It’s hard to ignore the connection Brown has with coach Mike Vrabel from their time together, making this option even more plausible.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Chargers appear to be in a bit of a bind. Their passing game struggled last year, with Rudd McConkie as the only shining star. The team has expressed interest in retaining veteran Keenan Allen, but the cumulative quality among their receivers has left much to be desired. They could definitely benefit from bringing in a player like Brown to bolster their offense.

Considering the Chargers’ current dynamics, they’ll need to reassess their deep-ball strategy, which has been lacking. Brown would certainly help open up the field, especially now that it seems Quentin Johnson might only take on a secondary role moving forward. With significant cap space available, the Chargers would do well to pursue Brown.

On a different note, one can’t overlook Kyle Shanahan’s impressive coaching last year, managing to carry an injured roster to the playoffs. The 49ers are reportedly considering parting with Brandon Aiyuk, highlighting their urgent need for a top-tier receiver. Injuries have plagued key players like Aiyuk, George Kittle, and with Deebo Samuel traded away, the 49ers find their passing game significantly weakened. They need a real offensive threat, and they certainly have the financial means to acquire one.

This could present an opportunity for Brown, especially for a franchise looking to contend for a championship. However, the question looms: would a short-passing West Coast scheme be as enticing for him compared to a more vertically-oriented team like the Patriots?

There’s also a wildcard scenario that, at first glance, might seem odd, but holds some merit upon closer inspection. The Rams showcased a formidable passing attack last season with Puka Nacua and Davante Adams, yet Adams carries a burdensome $28 million cap hit. If the Rams were to move on from Adams after June 1, they could save $18 million, approximately what they’d pay Brown. Smart teams always look to upgrade, and it seems likely Brown could significantly enhance their passing game.

Coach Sean McVay has shown a willingness to pivot strategies, which leaves the door open for the Rams to cut ties with Adams and bring in Brown.
