Israel to Release 250 Palestinian Prisoners Amid Ceasefire
In connection with a ceasefire agreement brokered by the U.S., Israel is set to release 250 Palestinians currently serving prison sentences, potentially starting next week.
The Israeli government made the names of the prisoners public on Friday. Notably, Marwan Barghouti, a prominent Palestinian leader, is not included in this list, although some individuals with connections to serious offenses are.
These prisoners have been convicted of terrorism-related crimes over the past two decades. Interestingly, they are not thought to be associated with Hamas, the organization linked to the October 7, 2023, attacks.
Among those slated for release are:
- Mahmoud Kawasme: A 45-year-old official from Hamas who was previously released in a 2011 prisoner swap but rearrested in March 2024 for allegedly financing the kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teens in 2014.
- Imad Kawasume: A 52-year-old Hamas leader responsible for a double suicide bombing that killed 16 Israelis in 2004. He was apprehended in his underwear in the West Bank, two months after the attacks, and is currently serving 16 life sentences.
- Morad Bader Abdullah Addais: Convicted in 2016 for the murder of a 39-year-old mother, he was just 16 at the time of the crime, reportedly returning home afterward to watch a movie with his family.
- Bilal Ajalmeh: A member of Fatah, he was captured by Israeli forces in 2003 after carrying out 17 shooting attacks on Israeli highways.
- Hilmi Abdul Karim Muhammad Hamash: Convicted of coordinating a bus suicide bombing in 2004 that resulted in 11 Israeli deaths and injured 50 others.
- Iyad Abu Al Rub: An Islamic Jihad commander involved in a series of bombings from 2003 to 2005, leading to 13 fatalities.
- Ahmad Ismail Ahmad Kawasmeh: Serving a life sentence for the murder of Rabbi Shaya Ben David in 2018.
- Bahel Badr: Arrested in 2004 for planning a suicide bombing that killed eight near an IDF base.
- Ismail Hamdan: A member of Fatah, convicted of kidnapping and fatally shooting an Israeli man in 2002.
- Mohammad Nasser Shaaban Abu Rabea: A 31-year-old Hamas operative serving a life sentence for the stabbing deaths of two Israeli civilians in 2015.
Barghouti is expected to serve his multiple life sentences; he was convicted for a 2004 incident that resulted in five Israeli deaths.
Additionally, as part of this arrangement, Israel intends to release another 1,700 Palestinians taken from Gaza without charges over the past two years. This comes in exchange for the remaining 48 hostages held by Hamas.
As the first stages of a military withdrawal from Gaza commenced on Friday, Hamas indicated it would release 20 Israeli hostages believed to be alive by a Monday deadline.
