What led to this decline?
A recent Gallup survey from 2023 indicates that only 39% of American adults feel “very proud” to be American, marking the lowest level in history. Another report from the Wall Street Journal reveals an even steeper drop: in 1998, 70% of Americans considered patriotism “very important,” while by 2023, that figure had plummeted to just 38%.
So, what’s causing this? A generation molded by school environments and social media seems to have absorbed an anti-American mindset. Tiktok influencers, who mock capitalism, and Hollywood figures presenting patriotism negatively have contributed to this shift. Many young people now see America’s founding ideals as more of a burden than a blessing. There’s often a focus on historical injustices—like slavery, racism, and sexism—while the foundational principles that have created the freest and most prosperous nation are overlooked.
Why is patriotism important?
This decline isn’t merely emotional; it has serious implications for our nation’s future. When citizens lose faith in their country, they may disengage. There’s a drop in voting, serving the community, and overall citizen involvement, which can erode national unity and a common purpose.
Statistics back this up. In 2022, only 13% of 8th graders demonstrated proficiency in U.S. history according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress. If educational changes aren’t made, this knowledge gap could evolve into a civic crisis.
A shift towards hope
Nonetheless, there are positive signs emerging. Data from the Tufts Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (Circle) shows that in 2024, 46% of young voters chose Donald Trump, a rise from 36% in 2020.
Moreover, the same Gallup survey found that 60% of Republicans feel “very proud” to be American. These results suggest that cultural battles are often waged—and can be won—outside classrooms and major media platforms.
