Japanese Political Parties Explore AI Leadership

After recent election setbacks, Japanese political parties are considering the idea of leadership by non-human entities.

The emergence of the Regeneration Party can be traced back to January, when former mayor Shinji Ishimaru surprised the nation by securing second place in the 204th Governor race in 2024.

“Legally, the representative must be natural,” came a statement reflecting on the current political landscape.

Although the Regeneration Party lacked a clear policy, platform, or membership guidelines, they aimed to make a mark in Japan’s council elections. Unfortunately, they didn’t manage to secure any of the 124 available seats during that election cycle.

Ishida stepped down following significant losses, and reports suggest that a new leader has now been appointed.

Okumura, a doctoral student, won the leadership contest but felt inadequate for the role. Last week, he handed over the responsibilities to a new party leader.

“The new leader will be AI,” the young leader stated decisively.

Interestingly, this leader, a student from Kyoto University, identified himself as merely an aide to artificial intelligence, which he suggested would take on the form of a penguin avatar—perhaps a nod to Japan’s fondness for animals.

Okumura explained that while the party “delegates decisions to AI,” he acknowledges the legal requirement that the representatives must be human. “So, officially, humans will serve as representatives,” he noted.

In a conversation, Okumura expressed his belief that AI would eventually manage decision-making for the Regeneration Party. “I believe it can achieve things more accurately than humans. This approach enables us to account for perspectives that people often overlook, fostering a more inclusive political dialogue,” he shared.

It’s worth mentioning that AI avatars weren’t the only unusual leadership decisions this month.

In Albania, just a week prior, the announcement was made that an AI Minister would oversee the processing of governmental bids from businesses.

This AI, named Diera, meaning “sun,” had already been serving as a virtual assistant for public services. Prime Minister Eddie Rama claimed that AI was “100% corruption-free.”

As for the penguin leadership, Okumura stated that there’s currently no set timeline for its implementation and the finalized design is still under wraps.
