Freddie, the Celebrating Tourist
A European tourist known as “Freddie” might just be doing more to honor the upcoming 250th anniversary of America than most Americans, myself included.
Freddie, a German soccer enthusiast, traveled to the U.S. specifically to catch the national team in the FIFA World Cup. His road trip through the South has captivated many online, especially his excitement for classic American spots like Waffle House and local gas stations, as well as the experience of college football. Some Twitter users even liken him to a living embodiment of the “The European mind cannot understand this” meme.
He has explored states like Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama, walking along the Chattahoochee River and immersing himself in the atmosphere at Auburn’s football stadium. To his surprise, he also stumbled across a German-style village in northern Georgia.

Freddie also experienced the Southern hospitality, noting how friendly and generous Americans can be. For instance, when he and his friends were faced with a rainy walk to the stadium, the hotel receptionist offered them a ride instead.

Watching Europeans rediscover simple pleasures—things many of us take for granted—provides a much-needed perspective boost.

I realize it’s been a while since my last visit to Waffle House, and now I’m thinking about planning my own pilgrimage this summer. I think Freddie’s journey has shown me just how special America’s 250th anniversary can be, reminding me to recognize the charm right before my eyes.
