A recent overdose death highlights the issue of substance abuse

The adult film industry is again mourning the loss of a young star who reportedly died from an overdose. Experts point out that prolonged substance use and other hazards behind the scenes are just a few of the harsh realities in the porn world.

Studies indicate that many adult performers, particularly women, often engage in risky behaviors, including drug abuse. In fact, over the past three years, at least six female porn actresses have tragically lost their lives due to this lifestyle.

Kylie Page’s lifeless body, just 28 years old, was discovered in a Hollywood apartment on June 25th after friends hadn’t heard from her for a while.

She had appeared in films such as “Frisky Frishman” and “Naughty Bookworms”, and was featured in a 2017 Netflix miniseries about the industry.

According to reports, Page’s home contained fentanyl and various drug paraphernalia, leading authorities to suspect an accidental overdose.

Amy Marie Merrell, co-executive director of a nonprofit aimed at helping adult performers with mental health resources, described Page as “a kind, loving, wonderful person.”

Most research focuses more on the impact of pornography on viewers rather than the performers themselves. Studies show that women in adult films often experience worse mental health outcomes compared to other women.

Dr. Corita Grudzen, who is affiliated with the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, noted that alcohol and drug use is notably higher among adult film actors, especially among women. Many enter the industry with existing addictions, and drug use often develops through social connections or as a way to cope with the pressures they face.

Issues such as depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and even suicidal thoughts are not uncommon among these performers, Grudzen highlighted.

The tragic stories of other performers add to this grim reality:

Please Angelina

Trans performer Angelina was discovered dead in her Las Vegas apartment in March 2022, at the age of 24. The coroner ruled her death an accidental overdose from fentanyl-laced cocaine. Her mother insisted it was not suicide, sharing that while her daughter had been off meth for over a year, she still experimented with party drugs.

Friend and fellow performer Aspen Brooks discovered Angelina’s body, expressing her shock and grief over the loss.

Sophie Anderson

British star Sophie Anderson passed away from a fatal GHB overdose at 36. Previously known as Karen Cook, she gained fame for her role in “Taboo House” but was found with enough drugs in her system to be lethal for several people. Friends noted incidents of abuse leading up to her death, and a former colleague reflected on her warm and quirky personality.

Sofia Leone

Another tragic case is Sofia Leone, who died from an overdose in March 2024. Initially suspected foul play was ruled out, with authorities concluding that she suffered an accidental overdose linked to her struggle with alcoholism.

Her stepfather spoke of the shock and heartbreak felt by her loved ones, emphasizing her gentle nature and deep love for animals.

Jesse Jane

Jesse Jane, who transitioned to mainstream television and film, met an untimely death due to an overdose in early 2024. The 43-year-old had high levels of cocaine and fentanyl in her system. Known for her vibrant personality, she left a noticeable impact on those around her.

Kagney Linn Karter

In 2024, Kagney Linn Karter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after previously battling addiction. While she had shown signs of recovery, she succumbed to her mental health struggles. Friends noted her resilience and the impact she had on her community through her determination and support for others.

When discussing substance abuse, Merrell emphasized that individuals in the adult industry are not a monolith. She feels that attributing addiction solely to their profession is an oversimplification. Everyone’s experiences and struggles are unique.
