New York City is synonymous with baseball. The city’s two major league teams, the New York Yankees and the New York Mets, have only ever faced off once before for the championship in the 2000 World Series, known as the Subway Series, and the Yankees won in a landslide victory.
After the 2000 series, the Mets and Yankees both climbed their way to the classics, but on different paths. The Yankees struggled to get back to the World Series, and the Mets struggled to make the postseason at all. So a pop-up of current Yankees heavyweight Alex Rodriguez seemingly slipping into the glove of current Mets comeback boy Luis Castillo seemed like it could turn the tide in a June 2009 showdown in the city. After all, A-Rod was clearly stymied by reports of his past steroid use, while Castillo seemed like a genius signing for the Mets front office. Both teams were looking to change the “big brother and little brother” narrative surrounding their respective clubs.
right?
