Sequel to “Social Network” in the Works
A recent report indicates that a sequel to “Social Network” is set to be directed by Aaron Sorkin, more than 15 years after the original film’s release. This drama, which explored Facebook’s challenging inception, garnered critical acclaim upon its debut in 2010.
Sorkin, who received an Oscar for his adapted screenplay, is also slated to return as the screenwriter for this follow-up. While specific production dates remain unannounced, it’s worth noting that Sorkin’s new film will be called “Part 2.” However, it won’t be a direct sequel, but rather a continuation that delves into the early days of what would evolve into one of the largest social media platforms globally.
Interestingly, while the original “Social Network” focused on the story of Mark Zuckerberg and the controversies surrounding Facebook’s rise, Sorkin has stated that this sequel will differ in scope. Instead of narrowing it down to just events like the 2021 Capitol riots, it will expand to cover topics such as the 2020 election, youth interactions on Facebook, and the platform’s implications worldwide.
Sorkin has been vocal about Facebook’s role in shaping public discourse. In fact, he recently criticized the platform for promoting divisive content, which he believes is intentionally designed to maximize user engagement. He expressed his concerns about algorithms stoking discord, creating an “endless scroll” of contentious posts that keep users hooked.
Despite the anticipation surrounding the sequel, confirmations about returning cast members, including Jesse Eisenberg as Zuckerberg, have yet to be announced. Sorkin is said to be consulting with original director David Fincher in assembling the cast.
Overall, this new installment is opening discussions not just on Zuckerberg’s persona, but also raising significant questions about the wider global impact of social media. It seems the sequel might tackle a range of complex themes, which, I think, could resonate in today’s digital landscape.
