A setback for the country

On Monday, former President George W. Bush expressed his admiration for Vice President Dick Cheney, describing him as a “calm and steady presence in the White House” during tumultuous times, following Cheney’s passing at 84.

“Richard B. Cheney’s death represents a profound national loss and a deep sadness for his friends,” Bush stated in a heartfelt message released Tuesday morning. “Laura and I will always remember Dick Cheney as a man of decency and honor. History will recognize him as one of the most commendable public servants of his time. He exemplified patriotism and brought integrity, keen intelligence, and a serious commitment to every position he held.”

Cheney, who had a lengthy career, started off as a congressman from Wyoming for over ten years. He served as Secretary of Defense under Bush’s father during the Gulf War and, interestingly enough, became Bush’s running mate in the successful 2000 presidential campaign, despite earlier expressing disinterest in the role.

“When I first sought a vice presidential candidate in 2000, I asked Dick to help me find the best choice,” Bush recalled. “After lengthy discussions about what I needed – experience, judgment, character, and loyalty – it became clear that Dick Cheney was exactly who I needed. I’m thankful he stood by my side for the following eight years.”

Diving deeper into Cheney’s contributions, Bush mentioned, “He was a reassuring presence during intense national crises. I depended on him for honest, straightforward advice, and he consistently delivered. He adhered to his principles and prioritized the freedom and security of Americans. Throughout his two terms and remarkable career, Cheney’s achievements distinctly mirrored his commitment to the nation he cherished.”

Bush concluded by acknowledging Cheney’s love for his country, stating, “His devotion to America was second only to that of his family. Laura and I send our heartfelt condolences to Vice President Cheney’s wife, Lynn, along with their daughters and grandchildren, all of whom he held in high regard. We are keeping Lynn, Liz, Mary, and the Cheney family in our thoughts as they pay tribute to this great man.”
