A coalition of over 140 organizations has reached out to House leaders regarding proposed tax and spending bills. They believe these measures could hinder the development of artificial intelligence (AI) for the next decade, raising alarm about the long-term implications of such legislation.
In a letter addressed to Speaker Mike Johnson and House Leader Hakeem Jeffries, the coalition warned that a 10-year pause on state-level AI regulations would result in a lack of accountability for technology development. They expressed concerns that companies could create harmful technologies without facing consequences. The letter noted that this could undermine public trust in AI, stating, “We only benefit from AI if people have a reason to trust it.”
Among the signatories were employees from Amazon for Climate Justice, groups advocating for consumer rights, academic institutions, and various civil society representatives. The proposals included in the administration’s “One Big Beautiful” bill would effectively prevent the enforcement of laws related to AI models and automated decision systems.
The broader bill will still need to clear a full chamber vote, though it recently passed a committee vote. Critics argue that the current push for a federal framework in AI regulations is crucial to manage the risks presented by unregulated technologies.
As debates continue in Congress, the coalition remains vocal about their desire for cautious regulation. They believe that politicians must prioritize safety in AI technology. The situation serves as a focal point in the ongoing dialogue about balancing innovation with responsible governance.
