NYU Hospital Cancels Transgender Youth Health Program

On Tuesday, NYU Langone Health, a hospital system in Manhattan, revealed plans to discontinue its “Transgender Youth Health Program” due to changes in leadership and increasing regulatory pressures.

The program was known for providing medical interventions, including hormone therapies, puberty blockers, and surgeries for minors.

Steve Ritea, a spokesperson for the hospital, stated, “Given the recent resignation of our medical director and the current regulatory environment, we have made the difficult decision to discontinue our Transgender Youth Health Program. We remain committed to supporting our patients during this change. However, our pediatric mental health care program will still be operational.”

The hospital’s decision appears to be influenced by the existing regulatory landscape, possibly linked to policies from the Trump administration that threaten federal funding for hospitals offering gender-related medical procedures to those under 18.

This program had already curtailed new admissions last year and had to cancel some bookings for early 2025 in response to earlier regulatory actions.

Other hospitals are facing similar choices under the same federal pressures. Notably, Rady Children’s Health in San Diego stopped administering cross-sex hormone therapy for individuals under 19 in early February 2026, citing escalated federal scrutiny and an ongoing U.S. Department of Health and Human Services investigation. A state court has temporarily mandated the continuation of certain treatments amid legal challenges.

Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, after navigating through initial service suspensions and reinstatements under pressure, ultimately closed its Trans Youth Health Development Center in mid-2025, remarking that there was no sustainable way forward due to the looming federal threats.
