Security Incident at Vancouver International Airport
A stolen plane triggered a significant security situation at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) on Tuesday afternoon, disrupting operations and leading to multiple flight reroutes.
The incident involved a small private aircraft and prompted YVR to suspend operations just before 1:30 PM local time. As a result, nine incoming flights had to be redirected to various nearby airports.
The Cessna 172 managed to land safely after a 39-minute air traffic halt, around 1:45 PM. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) took the pilot into custody.
Air traffic control recordings indicated that the controller alerted other pilots of the situation, stating, “There’s an aircraft that’s hijacked and is located near the airport… you have the ability to move at your discretion.”
Afterward, air traffic personnel continued to communicate about the situation, mentioning that the aircraft was still in visual range and awaiting further instructions.
Eventually, the RCMP confirmed that the stolen plane had been taken from Victoria International Airport and had entered about 40 miles of Vancouver’s airspace.
The airport’s spokesman commented that the incident was handled without any injuries. Safety and security remain top priorities, and authorities indicated that they would review protocols and make improvements where necessary.
A witness described seeing a low-flying aircraft, noting that something seemed off. “A few minutes later, the plane made another pass and turned wide,” he recounted.
On July 16, the RCMP identified the pilot as 39-year-old Shaheer Cassim. Reports suggest he may have threatened a flight instructor before taking control of the aircraft.
Sergeant Tammy Lobb from the RCMP stated the suspect appears to have had “ideological motives,” but fortunately, no injuries were reported.
British Columbia’s Minister of Public Safety commended first responders for their quick actions during the incident.
YVR announced that flights have resumed, though travelers may still face some delays and should check with airlines for further updates.
