Lawrence O’Donnell Suggests Trump May Be in Decline After Diplomatic Meetings
MSNBC anchor Lawrence O’Donnell is raising eyebrows with his belief that he may have uncovered a scandal involving former President Donald Trump. Following meetings with Vladimir Putin in Alaska and key European leaders at the White House, as well as a discussion with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, O’Donnell points to Trump’s notably light public schedule as evidence of a possible downturn.
This situation isn’t quite like the criticism faced by Charles Lindbergh, who was accused of being idle after his historic flight to Paris; those who questioned him didn’t recognize that he was resting after a significant achievement.
O’Donnell suggests that Trump’s reduced visibility might be due to him struggling physically, implying that Trump could be in a similar state to a seriously ill post-Yalta Franklin D. Roosevelt—essentially worn out.
It seems there’s a notion that Trump could become the centerpiece of the next big anti-Trump narrative. There’s already an emerging discourse focused on Trump’s health as a factor in the upcoming 2024 election, with some Democrats making concerns about his age a prominent theme.
A report from the Washington Post noted, “The oldest president in history reportedly reduced his campaign due to fatigue,” indicating that some are framing his age as a significant detriment.
If Trump were much younger—say, 49—these critiques might not hit as hard, or maybe they would certainly be seen as exaggerated claims regarding his health and energy levels.
It was undoubtedly misleading when former White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre claimed Trump was having difficulty keeping pace with Joe Biden.
But one could wonder, would it really be shocking to think that Trump, faced with a younger aide, might struggle to match their energy?
There’s a relentless swirl of social media activity, media engagements, phone calls, and the pressures of trade negotiations alongside domestic issues. This is not to mention the unending effort to assert his influence on a global scale.
Trump has become the oldest U.S. president, yet throughout his term, he has demonstrated an intense desire to remain prominent, almost stubborn in asserting his influence.
Alice Roosevelt once quipped about her father wanting to be present at every major event; one could imagine Trump feeling similarly driven to maintain his visibility.
During his time, Trump displayed a unique ability to navigate high-stakes diplomacy, often likened to how one might view school children in a competitive environment.
If anyone’s convinced Trump is aging, they might also recall the famous “Saturday Night Live” skits depicting President Reagan as a charming yet cunning character behind the scenes.
In contrast, it might seem like Trump is putting on a show of boundless energy in public while retreating to a quieter life behind closed doors, perhaps unwinding with television shows.
Interestingly, the same individuals who downplay Biden’s evident struggles now seem eager to suggest that Trump is experiencing a decline.
However, it’s clear that while Biden’s difficulties are plainly visible, steps have been taken by his administration to shield him and curtail his public appearances.
Regardless of Trump’s current state, he is certainly not hiding or delegating responsibilities. He may not be in the prime of his life, but he appears to wield his influence and authority with remarkable enthusiasm and vigor.
