Danish toy company and British supercar manufacturer McLaren have outdone themselves with their latest collaboration. It's a fully drivable, life-size replica of the iconic McLaren P1 hypercar, made almost entirely from LEGO Technic pieces.

This isn't your typical weekend Lego project. A team of 23 dedicated experts from LEGO and McLaren spent over 8,000 hours bringing this ambitious vision to life. The result is a 1:1 scale model of the McLaren P1. This is not just for display. actually drive.

In terms of numbers
The scale of this project is astonishing. The team used 342,817 LEGO Technic pieces to build the replica. To power the car, 768 Lego motors are included, allowing it to reach an impressive top speed of 40 miles per hour. This model weighs 2,690 pounds, which is a little lighter than the original P1's weight of 3,075 pounds. The development and construction process took a total of 8,344 hours.

From toys to trucks
What makes this Lego creation unique is its functionality. Unlike previous life-sized LEGO vehicles, this P1 replica has fully functional steering, allowing you to navigate the corners of a real race track. To put it to the test, McLaren F1 driver Lando Norris took the wheel and completed one lap of the legendary Silverstone circuit, covering a distance of 5.66 miles.

Creating a drivable car from Lego pieces posed a unique challenge for the team. They needed to make sure the structure could support its own weight while incorporating a functioning steering and suspension system. Because of the original P1's compact design, installing all the necessary components was a puzzle in itself, requiring innovative solutions and careful planning.

History of collaboration
This isn't the first time Lego and McLaren have teamed up. The two companies have been working together since 2015, producing various Technic models of McLaren cars. But this full-size, driveable P1 marks a new pinnacle in the partnership between the two companies, demonstrating what can be achieved when creativity and engineering expertise come together.
