Aaron Boone discusses placing a wreath at the 9/11 memorial: 'Very significant'

Yankees Remember 9/11 with Wreath-Laying Ceremony

On September 11th, during a home game, Yankees manager Aaron Boone, along with several players including pitchers Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon, took part in a wreath-laying ceremony at Monument Park to honor the victims of the 2001 terrorist attacks.

“It really makes sense,” Boone commented prior to the Yankees’ 9-3 win against the Tigers. “We’ve done this a few times before, and it’s meaningful. Walking with Gerrit and Carlos, appreciating the monument—it’s powerful to reflect on the Pentagon, the Twin Towers, and the first responders.”

This win helps the Yankees maintain a three-game lead over the Blue Jays in the American League East, particularly after Toronto’s 6-0 win against the Astros.

Next season, the Yankees and Mets will face off to mark the 25th anniversary of the tragic events on September 11th. Notably, they met previously at Citi Field to honor the 20th anniversary in 2021.

“You just wake up and it’s hard to believe it’s been so long,” Boone expressed. “We had that game at Citi Field a few years back—it was so meaningful. There were so many personal stories shared that day, as it is today.”

Boone remarked on the intense emotions felt by attendees, noting, “You can really see the raw feelings in the crowd. It’s profound; people get emotional but remain quiet. You can feel that deeply.”

During the game, the Yankees donned caps honoring New York’s First Responders, and FDNY firefighter Regina Wilson performed the national anthem.

On a lighter note, the Savannah Bananas are scheduled to play at the stadium this Saturday and Sunday while the Yankees are away in Boston. Boone reminisced about a visit to the Savannah games, saying, “I went down to Tampa when they were there—it was cool. The venue was packed. I enjoyed it, but it’s interesting in a different way.”

As for the upcoming games against the Red Sox, Lewis Gill will start the series at Fenway Park, followed by Max Fried and Will Warren over the next couple of days.
