Aaron Boone of the Yankees throws gum in frustration over disputed foul ball decision

Controversial Ejections in Yankees vs. Red Sox Game

In a tense moment during the Yankees’ loss to the Red Sox on Friday, manager Aaron Boone and second baseman DJ LeMahieu were ejected in the 10th inning for their objections regarding a foul ball call. The game took place at Fenway Park, ending with a score of 2-1.

With two outs in the top of the 10th, LeMahieu attempted to hit a ball from Red Sox reliever Garrett Whitlock that veered down the right field line. Umpire Elemy Lehak called it a foul ball, prompting LeMahieu to express his frustration as he ran past the first base line. Boone, not one to hold back, made a call for a review.

Following a lengthy review, the umpire’s decision stood, which only fueled Boone’s anger. He raised his hands in disbelief, tossed his gum onto the field, and was subsequently ejected by home plate umpire John Tunpan.

Boone later spoke to reporters, stating, “I think a significant part of the ball was on the line.” His frustration was evident as he sought a reversal of the call.

LeMahieu, who also stepped up to voice his disagreement, was ejected for the first time in his 15-year career. He remarked to Lehak, “That was a brutal call,” adding that he was quite surprised by the outcome of the discussion.

In the ensuing inning, the Yankees failed to score, and the Red Sox ultimately took the win, marking the first game of the three-game series. The Yankees (42-26) will look to rebound against the Red Sox (35-36) in their next matchup at 7:15 PM ET.
