Aaron Boone upset after Willson Contreras' incident causes benches to clear

Aaron Boone expressed his thoughts on Willson Contreras, criticizing the Red Sox first baseman’s response to an inside pitch that led to a bench-clearing incident on Friday night. While Boone’s frustration wasn’t as intense as Contreras’s, he didn’t hold back.

Boone remarked, “I think that’s just what he does—his arm hanging over the plate, not knowing where to go.” This comment followed the Yankees’ 6-1 loss, marking their second consecutive defeat at Fenway Park. He suggested that perhaps Contreras had a strategy in mind, but ultimately, the Yankees struggled to get the ball to him as needed. Boone found the warnings issued during the game to be somewhat absurd.

The rivalry flared up in the fifth inning when Boston was up 4-0. At that point, Contreras had already made an impact, with an RBI and a solo homer. However, things escalated after he was again hit by a pitch, which led him to confront Yankees pitcher Will Warren.

No actual fights broke out, and no players were ejected from the game. Contreras downplayed the situation, calling it “part of the game.” Still, Warren seemed a bit annoyed when he was asked about the incident, replying with a terse “No comment.”

Warren shared, “I pitch competitively. He said something, and I responded. I’m just trying to focus on my pitches.” He added that he was trying to stick to his game plan, while Contreras was doing his own thing in the batter’s box.

Both teams received warnings from home plate umpire Tyler Jones, but Boone questioned whether the bench incident warranted such a move. He seemed to view the ruling as questionable, remarking with amusement, “I don’t know if it’s automatic or not, but I kind of understand. I mean, it’s 2026, right?”

When pressed about Contreras once more, Boone concluded decisively, “I think we all know how ridiculous that was. Let’s just leave it alone. Seriously.”

The Yankees’ struggles continued as they faced the Red Sox, losing the first two matches of this four-game series. They will next square off against Red Sox left-hander Jake Bennett on Saturday afternoon, while Gerrit Cole looks to bounce back after a rough outing against Detroit.
