Yankees Consider Infield Changes Amid Performance Issues

Toronto – The Yankees brought Jazz Chisholm Jr. on board as their second baseman in July of last year.

Since then, he’s been part of the postseason rotation, having played in 84 out of 115 games, but he’s also started at third base on three occasions.

As the trade deadline of July 31 approaches, the Yankees might consider acquiring a third baseman, though for now, it seems uncertain that Chisholm will return to second base, allowing DJ LeMahieu to move to third.

Manager Aaron Boone mentioned on Wednesday, before the Yankees’ close loss to the Blue Jays (11-9), that they were letting players have those discussions as needed.

After Tuesday’s game, Boone seemed to keep the possibility of a switch open; however, the conversation seemed to take a step back by Wednesday.

“We’re always having these discussions. I was just responding to queries,” Boone stated.

The question resurfaced, especially since there were noticeable issues with the current lineup during the game.

Chisholm notably made a throwing error in that game and mishandled a slow roller at third base during four innings.

Although the Yankees led at one point, they chose to let an infield single extend the inning, leading to a three-run homer by Andrés Giménez that shifted the score to 4-2 in favor of the Blue Jays.

In the eighth inning, Loner replaced LeMahieu at second base—a move that struck many as unusual given the veteran’s declining range.

This latest error marked Chisholm’s seventh of the season. Last year, he filled in at third base after Gleyber Torres opted to stay at second, showcasing a dynamic pairing with Anthony Volpe.

However, Chisholm was sidelined due to an oblique strain, while LeMahieu has since returned from injury and has predominantly played second base.

LeMahieu, who contributed by going 2-2 with two RBI singles in Wednesday’s game, expressed that he felt more at ease at second base, his natural position. He suggested that maintaining this alignment could help the Yankees remain healthy while assessing their offensive potential.

Currently, at 37 years old and still under contract for another season, he is batting .254 with a .664 OPS. He generally produces solid hits, showing exit velocities of 92.4 mph, which is notably higher than his career average of 90.5 mph, although the results haven’t been as he hoped.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. indicated he’s willing to play wherever the Yankees require, although he sees second base as his strongest position. His limited experience at third has shown at various points.

Still, moving Chisholm to third could give the Yankees more options as the trade deadline looms. They are likely to look for infield hitters, and having a player flexible enough to cover two positions could ease their search.

“Both players are incredibly skilled defenders, no matter where they are on the field,” Boone commented. “We’ll continue to evaluate that.”
