Aaron Donald’s anticipated return to the Los Angeles Rams may not be imminent, as Coach Sean McVay indicated. There’s a bit of uncertainty surrounding the timing of his comeback.
Following the Rams’ initial preseason game, McVay was questioned about Donald—who has earned ten Pro Bowl selections and has been named Defensive Player of the Year three times. McVay chose to keep his comments somewhat vague but ended up discussing the matter at length.
He summarized the situation with, “We’re not there yet.” This might be surprising given that there were various reports suggesting Donald would make his intentions known by the time the team resumed training on August 7.
However, one report highlighted that it’s not straightforward. It stated that Donald wants to feel capable and valuable, not just like someone chasing a Super Bowl ring. He’s evidently cautious about how he is perceived.
McVay acknowledged this nuance in the situation. He mentioned, “I think he’s earned the right to know himself regarding whether he can stack up the days and perform at a certain level.” This relates to the expectations Donald has set for himself.
The Rams clearly want him back. If his body holds up, he seems eager to play after being away from the game since 2023. Yet, it would be an oversimplification to assume his return is a certainty.
McVay pointed out that if pressed for a decision, Donald should have clarity about his own situation. He hopes that this clarity can come soon but wants to be respectful of Donald’s process. It’s a balancing act, emphasizing the importance of not creating pressure where there doesn’t necessarily need to be any.
