Aaron Glenn’s Ups and Downs as a Coach
Aaron Glenn has experienced a tough season before. Currently, he’s facing an 0-4 record in his initial season as a Jets coach.
Back in 2021, he started with an 0-8 record while serving as the Lions’ defensive coordinator under Dan Campbell.
“Let me tell you, being 0-8 is not fun,” Glenn mentioned recently. “When you’re in that situation, people really chase you, you know? As a coach, it’s crucial to grasp how you want to build things, the foundation you’re trying to create. We all felt that pressure. The entire staff really put in the effort, and I think it showed.”
Now, Glenn and the Jets are aiming to avoid a fourth 0-5 start in the team’s history during their upcoming game against the Cowboys (1-2-1).
It’s not just about the poor records, though. The Jets have struggled significantly in three of their four games this season. Last week against Miami, they racked up 13 penalties and turned the ball over three times in a 27-21 defeat.
Glenn sees a connection between the 2021 Lions and this year’s Jets.
Following their rough start, the Lions turned it around to finish 9-8 and made it to the NFC Championship Game in 2023.
“We knew success would eventually come, and when it did, it felt like we were on a roll,” Glenn recalled. “I genuinely feel the same way here and totally understand how fans are feeling. It stings for me, too. But I have faith in our approach; I believe there’s a breakthrough coming.”
Interestingly, Glenn has made history as the first coach of the Jets to have five consecutive losses.
By the way, it’s worth noting that Adam Gase also started 0-4 in 2019 and went on to secure a victory against the Cowboys in week 5. Maybe history has a way of repeating itself.
This week, the Jets have been focusing on the positives, hoping that could lead to a turnaround. Quarterback Justin Fields pointed out, “We’ve lost three games by just one score. So it’s encouraging to see that. If we can clean up the turnovers and penalties, I think we’ll be in a solid position to win, rather than just saying we’re almost there.”
