Quincy Williams’ Status Uncertain Following Changes in Jets Lineup

Aaron Glenn hasn’t shared much about Quincy Williams’ condition, only remarking that the benched linebacker “will be fine.” It’s been a challenging week for Williams; on Tuesday, his brother Quinnen was traded to the Cowboys, and the day before that, the Jets informed Quincy he would no longer be the starting linebacker—a point he confirmed to reporters on Wednesday.

Glenn has been somewhat reserved regarding details. “Let me put it this way,” the head coach stated on Friday. “All conversations between Quincy and me stay private. First and foremost. We have a specific way of doing things here. And lastly, Quincy is going to be fine. Trust me.”

During practice, while players were stretching, Glenn and Williams were seen hugging and chatting. It’s curious, you know? Seemingly, there’s a good rapport there.

Williams mentioned that his coach pointed out issues with his performance, stating it was “degrading” and not meeting the team’s standards. He had a solid start this season, racking up 15 tackles and 1.5 sacks in the first three weeks. However, a shoulder injury landed him on injured reserve, sidelining him until he returned for the Week 8 win over Cincinnati.

He noted that coaches wanted him to focus on running more “downhill and with more hands” on the field. In his absence, fifth-round pick Kiko Mauigoa is expected to start this Sunday at home against the Browns.

Defensive coordinator Steve Wilkes commented on Williams’ importance to the team, saying, “Quincy is still a significant part of our goals.” He went on to emphasize the need for players to have “great eyes” and to be aggressive, especially at the linebacker position. It sounds like there’s still hope for him to contribute meaningfully.

Glenn continued to withhold information regarding the starting quarterback for Sunday’s game, asserting, “We will have a QB.” It seems like there’s a bit of suspense around that decision.

Justin Fields is anticipated to take the helm, while Tyrod Taylor, who missed the trip to Cincinnati due to a knee issue, isn’t listed on the injury report. Meanwhile, Mauigoa, currently dealing with a concussion, seems doubtful for Sunday but did practice fully on Friday after being restricted earlier in the week.

Additionally, running back Khalil Herbert (groin) missed Friday’s practice, and both offensive lineman Xavier Newman (ankle) and wide receiver Garrett Wilson (knee) are listed as questionable, though Wilson participated fully in practice.
