Jets Linebacker Jamien Sherwood Faces Challenges in 2025 Season
HERTFORDSHIRE, England — In March, the Jets secured linebacker Jamien Sherwood with a three-year, $45 million deal. By August, his teammates had chosen him as one of their captains.
Yet, Sherwood has been having a tough time throughout this 2025 season, contributing to the struggles of the Jets’ defense over the first five games.
Coach Aaron Glenn expressed that while Sherwood’s performance has shown some promise, there may be moments where he’s trying too hard.
“When you’re wearing a ‘C’ and have a hefty contract, it’s natural to feel the need to overperform,” Glenn remarked. “But it’s important for him to just focus on his responsibilities. Adjustments are key, and that’s a common experience for many players.”
“I believe he’s in a good spot now. There’s definitely room for improvement, like many of us. Watching his growth will be interesting,” he added.
Sherwood himself mentioned that he doesn’t feel enormous pressure from either the contract or his captaincy role. Still, he is determined to meet the expectations tied to those responsibilities.
“I wouldn’t say it’s pressure,” Sherwood clarified. “I just want to fulfill the expectations because they’re there. I know my capabilities, and I believe in my teammates to do their part too. What matters is that I consistently perform my role.”
Meanwhile, the Jets are expected to welcome back edge rusher Jermaine Johnson this week after he missed the last three games due to an ankle injury.
Although he didn’t practice on Wednesday, he’s anticipated to participate on Thursday. Glenn noted that this could be a significant step for Johnson, and he remains hopeful about his availability for the game against the Broncos.
“I think it’s very likely he will play on Sunday,” Glenn stated.
On the injury front, cornerback Michael Carter II (concussion) and wide receiver Allen Lazard (personal reasons) didn’t make the trip and are ruled out for Sunday. This may compel the Jets to promote a receiver from the practice squad for the matchup. Additionally, defensive tackle Quinnen Williams (groin) was limited during practice, while quarterback Justin Fields (knee) performed well but now appears on the injury report. Running back Kene Nwanwu (hamstring) missed practice, though Glenn mentioned he does train daily. The Jets also have a 21-day window to activate linebacker Ja Marquis Weston from the injured reserve.
