PHOENIX — Aaron Glenn is optimistic about Geno Smith’s potential.

During the NFL’s annual meeting on Tuesday, the Jets coach articulated his confidence in the team’s new starting quarterback.

“I believe he’s going to lead us to the promised land,” Glenn stated.

What that promised land actually means is open to interpretation. It’s certainly a significant statement coming from a coach who is making a comeback after a tough 3-14 season, paired with a quarterback who had a rough year, leading the NFL with 17 interceptions while with the Raiders.

Glenn shared his thoughts on how the Jets’ environment could help Smith perform better than he did in Las Vegas, highlighting the offense, including the offensive line, running game, and standout receiver Garrett Wilson.

“There’s something about a quarterback with a shoulder injury,” Glenn remarked. “He’s shown a lot of promise in this league, especially when you reflect on his time in Seattle. He’s a great fit for what we aim to do. … I feel he’s the right player for our plans, especially with our strong running game. Now, integrating play-action could be a game-changer for him.”

Smith had commendable seasons with the Seahawks in 2022 and 2023. However, his performance has dipped lately. Last year, he recorded 19 touchdowns against 17 interceptions, and he was sacked an astounding 55 times due to a struggling Raiders offense.

“I recognize he faced challenges, and honestly, many quarterbacks do too,” Glenn said. “If you examine the highest interception throwers over the last few years, you’ll see some notable names. I’m aware of what Smith attributes to last year’s performance. I don’t want to delve too deeply into that, but I think the Raiders’ situation played a part. There are elements I know he can improve on, and I’m eager to see his progress.”
