Quarterback Competition Heats Up for the Jets
The ongoing back-and-forth between Jets head coach Aaron Glenn and reporters about the quarterback situation is, well, back again. But this time, the uncertainty is a bit less murky.
In simpler terms, as the Browns prepare to face the Jets this Sunday after both teams had a bye week, it’s pretty clear that Justin Fields will be starting for the Jets.
Glenn, however, played coy during Monday’s press conference. When pressed about Fields’ status after he led the team to its first victory of the season, Glenn said, “You know I’m not going to give you that answer.” He did compliment Fields, though, saying, “Justin did a great job against Cincinnati, but I’m keeping things close to the vest.”
In that game against the Bengals, Fields threw for 244 yards, completed 21 out of 32 passes, scored a touchdown, and successfully converted two important two-point attempts, leading the Jets to a nail-biting 39-38 win.
Then there’s Tyrod Taylor, who was in the mix for the starting job but didn’t even make it to Cincinnati due to a lingering knee issue from training camp. Some within the Jets organization initially thought he could start if he healed up in time.
Glenn mentioned that Taylor would be practicing “some amount” this week, which suggests he’s still not back to full strength.
When questioned about the importance of establishing a quarterback’s confidence through communication with the coach, Glenn nervously retorted, “It gives a quarterback confidence when the player and coach talk and know who that player is. But I can’t say that’s what it revolves around.” He pointedly avoided confirming if Fields or Taylor would be notified about the starting decision during practice.
When asked about the implications for the team if Fields didn’t start next game despite his impressive performance, Glenn was evasive: “That’s not something to worry about, right?” He made it clear that by game day against the Browns, the starting quarterback would be decided.
In previous interviews, Glenn has cryptically cited “competitive advantage” as the reason for not revealing his starting QB. When asked for further clarification on Monday, he simply stated, “My own reasons.”
Interestingly, Fields’ showing against Cincinnati seems to have won him more support in the locker room. Jets guard Joe Tippman expressed, “It was great to see him perform like that. He’s preparing as if he wants to win a championship for all of us.”
Jets tight end Jeremy Ruckert echoed similar sentiments, calling him “a true professional.” Ruckert noted, “He believes in himself and this team, and he hasn’t let challenges shake his work ethic or energy.” He believes that Fields’ unwavering confidence really resonates with the team.
Defensive tackle Harrison Phillips added that Fields’ impressive play, especially amid a tough week leading up to the game, was inspiring. Phillips commented, “It’s clear that [Fields] played a big role in our win. His energy is contagious, especially with our current record.”
