Aaron Glenn’s Coaching Approach Might Defy Convention

Generally, when a defensive coach first takes the reins of a team, they tend to adopt a conservative strategy. However, Aaron Glenn seems poised to break that mold.

He admitted, “To be honest, my initial thought was to play it safe: ‘Men, let’s punt and just defend.’ But, in my mind, I also have an offensive mindset—while still being calculated,” he shared on Friday.

While Glenn has primarily been a defensive player and coach, he spent time with the Lions under Dan Campbell, who is known for his aggressive fourth-down calls. Campbell has actually set the NFL record for fourth-down attempts over the past four seasons, totaling 151 attempts from 2021 to 2024.

Glenn emphasized that his decision-making would rely heavily on the opponents and the circumstances of the game. “It really depends on who we’re facing and the situation at hand,” he noted. “What I do know is that I’m ready to decide quickly. And whatever that decision is, it’s going to be for the benefit of our team.”

In other news, defensive tackle Cam Hayward is caught in a contract disagreement with the Steelers and is uncertain about playing this Sunday. “We’re getting ready, but honestly, I can’t say I feel too optimistic. I’m just trying to remain present… I really don’t have all the answers. It’s just a waiting game,” he said during a press conference.

Hayward, a seven-time Pro Bowler, expressed his initial belief that adjusting his contract would be simpler than it has turned out to be. Traditionally, the Steelers avoid negotiating contracts mid-season.

In terms of injury updates, offensive lineman ESA Paul is out with an ankle issue, while Chukwuma Okorafor is listed as questionable due to a hand injury. Cornerback Sauce Gardner (fibula) and quarterback Tyrod Taylor (knee) fully participated in practice on Friday. The Steelers have ruled out defensive tackle Derrick Harmon due to a knee problem.
