Green Bay – Jets Coach Focuses on Reducing Penalties
New Jets coach Erlong Len is prioritizing the reduction of penalties this summer, but there’s still a lot to address.
During Saturday night’s preseason win against the Packers, the Jets committed 12 penalties across eight players. This included three personal fouls, which particularly upset Glenn.
“The only thing that doesn’t fit our brand is the number of penalties,” Glenn remarked. “Some were just undisciplined, and we really need to clean that up.”
Defensive player Michael Clemons, who struggled with penalties last season, received a personal foul for unnecessary roughness after getting into a scuffle with Zach Tom, who was also flagged.
Although the penalties canceled each other out, Glenn wasn’t pleased. He removed Clemons for a moment and expressed his frustration on the sideline.
“I have to handle that,” Glenn commented about the incident.
In the first half, the Jets also incurred two consecutive unnecessary roughness penalties for a late hit on the sideline.
Defensive ends Eric Watts and linebacker Marcelino McClary Ball were responsible this time. Glenn was clearly not happy with McClary’s actions as he came to the sideline.
In a notable moment, a 73-yard touchdown from Donovan Edwards was nullified due to a retention penalty on Liam Fornadel in the fourth quarter.
Wide receiver Allen Lazard was seen leaving the locker room with his arm in a sling. Glenn reported a shoulder injury that requires further evaluation.
Running back Isaiah Davis exited the game with an ankle issue, but Glenn seemed optimistic, stating, “I think he’s good.”
Another running back, Kene Nwangwu, is dealing with a calf injury, but Glenn assured it’s not serious. Safety Tony Adams also suffered a thigh injury, but Glenn didn’t seem overly concerned.
Defensive tackle Jay Tufele stood out in the game. He recorded 1.5 sacks and scored off a fumble recovery, making the most of his playing time, especially with Quinnen Williams and Byron Cowart out.
“It feels amazing,” Tufele expressed about his touchdown. “It was a defensive effort, and we capitalized on it.”
Tufele wanted to give the ball to Glenn afterward, but the coach instructed him to keep it.
Cornerback Jarrick Bernard-Converse didn’t travel to Green Bay due to medical reasons, but Glenn expects him back soon.
Injuries sidelined several other players who didn’t make the trip: quarterback Tyrod Taylor (knee), wide receiver Xavier Gipson (shoulder), cornerbacks Kris Boyd and Azureye’h Thomas (shoulder), guard John Simpson (back), tight end Mason Taylor (ankle), and defensive tackle Cowart (ankle).
