Quarterback Situation for Jets Remains Uncertain
The starting quarterback role for the Jets this week is uncertain. Justin Fields is currently in concussion protocol and missed the game against the Buccaneers on Sunday.
As a result, Tyrod Taylor will step in as the starter for their first road game of the season. Coach Aaron Glenn mentioned on Monday, “He’s in protocol right now. It’s tough to evaluate until we have more details, so I’ll have more for you as the week goes on.”
After a strong performance in their first week against the Steelers, Fields had a disappointing outing against the Bills, completing just three of 11 passes for a mere 27 yards. To make matters worse, a head injury sidelined him early in the fourth quarter.
Taylor was able to lead the offense to its only touchdown during a game that was already out of reach.
When asked about his stance on starting a quarterback without a full week of practice, Glenn said that while Taylor, who is 36, didn’t play in the preseason due to a knee issue, he’s not too worried about any rust that may affect his performance.
“Tyrod’s been around for a long time,” Glenn noted. “He gets what we’re trying to do. I’m not overly concerned.”
Interestingly, Taylor is known for being a mobile quarterback, making him a fit for the current offensive schemes.
In a moment of strategy discussion, Glenn explained a decision to punt from their own 28-yard line, even with a substantial lead. “We were still in the game. Our defense had been struggling a bit, and I didn’t want to give them a short field. The idea was to exert control and create a better field position,” he commented.
Unfortunately for the Jets, the Bills quickly capitalized on the situation, scoring a touchdown that pushed the lead to 30-3. The team clearly has challenges ahead as they navigate these decisions.
