Aaron Glenn's words for Jets players and supporters after the trade deadline

Jets’ Plans Shift After Trades of Key Players

Jets coach Aaron Glenn had mentioned earlier in the season his desire to create a team that fans could genuinely take pride in.

Unfortunately, it seems that goal has hit a bit of a snag.

When asked about the recent trades of star players Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams, Glenn reaffirmed his commitment to making fans proud but added an unexpected twist.

“We aim to be a team our fans can take pride in. But, honestly, I never claimed we would be proud of our fans at this moment,” Glenn stated. “Eventually, we hope to attain that pride. That’s still my objective, and I’ll reiterate it. This is a team our fans can feel proud of.”

Glenn’s comments align with the Jets’ trade decisions, which indicate a focus on both present performance and future potential.

In return for Gardner and Williams, the Jets netted three first-round picks and a second-round pick, allowing them to prepare for the 2026 and 2027 offseasons.

That said, there are still nine games left in this season. Glenn emphasized to his players that while the NFL landscape is ever-evolving, their goal remains unchanged: winning this year, starting with their matchup against the Browns on Sunday.

“We won last week without Sauce,” Glenn remarked. “We recognize how talented both he and Quinnen are, but, well, we need to move ahead. We now have substantial draft capital and are eager for what’s to come. When the time is right, we’ll deal with it.”

This season hasn’t gone smoothly for the Jets, as their record stands at just 1 win and 7 losses. The decision to trade away two of their top players sends a powerful message within the team.

However, Glenn mentioned that the players are feeling positive about their prospects.

“They’re excited for the game against Cleveland. That was their reaction,” Glenn shared. “They grasp the opportunity in front of them and are ready to face the challenge.”

Since taking over as coach in January, Glenn has consistently praised Williams and Gardner. Just a few months back, after Gardner’s contract extension, Glenn called him a foundational player for the team’s future. So what has changed?

“Here’s your chance,” Glenn explained. “No one wants to let go of a talented player like that. But when a substantial offer comes along, you really have to think it through.”

While general manager Darren Mousey was managing the trade talks, Glenn was deeply involved in negotiations.

“It was a very intense day,” Glenn admitted. “When an opportunity to build this team arises, it’s tough to turn down. Those players are exceptional. Every pro knows that. Change is the only constant in this league. Not just today, but all season, our players have emphasized that. This game is fluid; players and coaches come and go, but with change comes new opportunities.”

Interestingly, running back Breece Hall wasn’t part of the trade discussions, and Glenn reaffirmed his commitment to keep Hall on the team.

“I think I’ve made it clear that Breece is a player I never wanted to part with. He’s a really solid asset,” Glenn concluded.
