Judge’s Return and Yankees’ Challenge
PHILADELPHIA — Aaron Judge found himself back in the visitors’ dugout at Citizens Bank Park on Sunday night, watching as the Yankees faced an 11-4 defeat against the Phillies.
If the Yankees can bring Judge back and make a playoff run, some might find Sunday night’s lineup a bit intriguing.
However, if they can’t, it could signal a tough spot for a team that clearly needs some reinforcements ahead of the August 3 trade deadline, just a week away.
We’ll have a clearer picture of the Yankees’ future then, but realistically, it’s hard to expect much from the current lineup until both Judge and possibly Giancarlo Stanton return from the injured list.
This is even more pressing now that Cody Bellinger has also landed on the IL due to a strained hamstring.
When asked about what the team might need as the deadline approaches, Judge remarked, “That’s above my pay grade.” He went on to express confidence in the team, stating that it’s on the players to create opportunities for the front office to make necessary additions. “We’re looking forward to seeing what happens,” he added.
Yet, it feels like a significant struggle lies ahead for the current Yankees lineup.
Take a look at the middle of Sunday’s weakened order.
Amed Rosario, someone crucial to the Yankees’ strong performance last season, went just 1-for-18 on Sunday, striking out 11 times.
Still, he had to manage a triple against Philadelphia lefty Christopher Sanchez.
And with both Judge and Bellinger sidelined, Jason Dominguez stepped up as the main right fielder, batting cleanup ahead of Anthony Volpe.
Volpe notched two doubles — his first extra-base hits in a month — but then unfortunately made an errant throw that led to five runs for Philadelphia in the sixth inning, ultimately sealing the Yankees’ fate.
George Lombard Jr.’s advancement toward the majors seems to be accelerating. Despite a throwing error on Sunday, he’s hitting 12-for-26 with four extra-base hits over eight games since returning from the IL with a sprained finger.
In the third inning, Max Schumann, playing as a left fielder, misjudged a ball during Alec Bohm’s three-run double.
Jose Caballero once again couldn’t manage a hit, contributing to the frustrating loss.
Before the game, when asked whether another bat is necessary before the trade deadline, Aaron Boone acknowledged, “I know we want to try to improve the club. The front office is working hard on it, and they’ll try…You never know what’s going to happen.”
It’s reported that they are searching for a right-handed outfielder, a catcher, and help for the bullpen.
Despite these challenges, the Yankees remain in the hunt for a postseason spot as they gear up to face the White Sox in Chicago for four games, followed by three against the Cubs.
However, proceeding without Judge and the others won’t be a walk in the park.
Judge noted the team’s mindset is about “keeping moving forward. The minor league guys are ready, so we have a lot of depth.”
He added, “There is no one to replace Bellinger.”
Or, as the Yankees frequently point out, no easy replacement for Judge either.
