Aaron Masaitis: Donald Trump Is The Leader Europe Requires

Europe’s Wake-Up Call

After nearly two decades in the U.S. Marine Corps, I’ve learned a fundamental truth: peace often comes through strength. For many years, America’s resolve and leadership have shaped global dynamics. In Europe, our power helped defeat tyranny in two world wars, leading to lasting peace and prosperity.

President Trump’s recent speech in Davos reinforced America’s robust position and laid out a vision for future agreements aimed at bolstering the transatlantic alliance.

Despite differing perspectives in the U.S. and Europe, our core objectives largely align. We all desire peace and security for our families and communities. The real question is whether we can find the wisdom and bravery to pursue these goals together.

Trump’s leadership highlighted the challenges our alliance faces. A shared adversary threatens our way of life and seeks to dominate globally. Rather than mere rhetoric, it would be prudent for America’s allies to take his call seriously. This means addressing the Arctic, enhancing defense budgets, cutting through bureaucratic hurdles, and focusing on mutual interests.

Global Perspective

My experiences have shown me two facets of international collaboration: in military uniform and as a civilian. Within the European Union, I’ve witnessed how partnerships can thrive even amidst differences. Look at Cuba; it has suffered from isolation and economic hardship.

In nearby Venezuela, which has endured decades of communist oppression, Trump’s leadership has offered a glimmer of hope for freedom and economic recovery. These countries illustrate how the deceptions and corruption from adversaries directly impact our well-being.

As China positions itself to dominate globally, every nation faces a choice. Do we let adversaries dictate our lives, as seen in Cuba and Venezuela? Or do we stand for freedom and pursue peace through our leaders’ strength?

Decisions about our global future should not be left to those who have eroded our alliances for years. The U.S. needs leaders who engage with international partners, recognizing that some complex dilemmas have straightforward solutions.

A Way Forward

During my time in the Marine Corps, I traveled from the deserts of the Middle East to NATO exercises in Europe and partnership initiatives in Asia. What stood out to me was not our differences, but our shared fundamental values. Nations like Poland, Hungary, Croatia, and Bulgaria, often overlooked, are emerging leaders in Europe that prioritize their relationship with the U.S. They’re investing in NATO and are crucial for providing energy corridors and accessing critical resources.

Future international decisions are too significant to entrust to voices that have historically undermined our alliances. If the U.S. focuses more on Eastern Europe and its partners striving for freedom and economic growth, investments could yield substantial returns and foster a transformative partnership in the Balkans. Trump’s approach offers these nations an opportunity that communism cannot: a path based on mutual respect and shared interests, recognizing that strong nations create strong allies.

Veterans of America’s prolonged conflicts understand the responsibility that comes with being a leading nation. They recognize that strong leadership garners respect from both friends and foes. Moreover, they grasp that the world is evolving rapidly, with China extending its influence globally. Under Trump’s leadership, America’s resurgence has opened doors for peace and collaboration worldwide. It’s imperative that we take advantage of these opportunities.
