On Monday’s broadcast of NBC’s MTP Daily, Laredo Mayor Victor Treviño said Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s busing immigrants from Laredo to the Democratic-run city certainly helped. And one of the ways the governor has made this problem known to other parts of the country is to help the Democratic Party, including immigrants from Laredo. This idea of busing immigrants into cities run by .Do you think it will help in any way, or do you think it politicizes the crisis? What do you think of the governor’s response so far?”
Treviño replied: A little helps. But we need to understand that it is the smugglers who are overtaking the immigrants. So this is a situation we have to be aware of. Any little help. But I think this immigration reform should have happened long ago.and here’s the proof of what’s going on [that] There had been no reforms for years, even decades. ”
Haak then asked, “What are your thoughts on the changes that the Biden administration has introduced in the last week or so … changing enforcement further south and some about changing the way CBP moves people? The idea is these changes,” he asked. Could I have helped sooner? Even if the numbers pick up again in the near future, do you think you can maintain it?”
Treviño replied: “It’s certainly helpful what they’ve done, but like I said, these are acting things after the fact and we should have been doing this proactively long ago. But , indeed, that may have contributed to the decline in immigration that we are seeing.”
