Texas Governor Files Lawsuit Against Democrat Chair

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has initiated legal action aimed at removing Texas Democrat Chair Jean Wu from her position. This move comes amid ongoing tensions between Texas Democrats and Republicans.

“What’s at stake here? I believe it’s nothing less than the future of Texas. If a few lawmakers decide to abandon their responsibilities, it could significantly impact both regular and special sessions,” Abbott stated in the lawsuit.

Democratic lawmakers in Texas recently left the state in an effort to deny Republicans a quorum, which is crucial for passing legislation, including redistricting plans.

In a post on social media platform X, Wu emphasized the importance of fighting for Texas residents’ rights. “We’re standing up for Texans and all Americans. #txlege,” she noted.

Previously, Wu had dismissed Abbott’s threats and reaffirmed her stance after Democratic legislators exited Texas.

“Democrats are saying, ‘Come and take it,'” Wu remarked in a CNN appearance regarding the challenges posed to lawmakers’ seats.

Abbott’s lawsuit claims that by leaving Texas, Democrats forfeited their constitutional duties, thereby allowing critical legislation—such as flood relief, property tax cuts, and public school reforms—to be passed without their input. “Public records indicate these lawmakers have pursued funds to cover penalties incurred from their absences,” the lawsuit alleges. “The underlying issue is the long-term damage these absences have caused. They may return after a few days, but they risk encountering legislation that they won’t support.”

The Hill reached out for comments from Wu and the Texas House Democrat Caucus.

Responding to the lawsuit, sources from the caucus remarked that Abbott’s actions echo those of former President Trump, calling the legal challenge not only morally questionable but also a weak attempt to exert pressure.
