Disney Suspends ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ Over Controversial Remarks
Disney has put a temporary halt on the ABC show ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ starting September 17. This decision follows comments made by Kimmel, where he suggested that a supporter of Trump and the Maga movement, alleged to have assassinated Charlie Kirk, was arrested due to his political affiliations.
The suspension has drawn significant backlash from both Democrats and left-wing activists, along with major stakeholders of ABC and its affiliate stations, Sinclair and Nexstar. Sinclair, which was among the first to announce its withdrawal from airing the show, faced considerable scrutiny for this choice.
Amid this controversy, a few days later, an attack reportedly took place on some ABC affiliate stations. For instance, on Friday, shots were fired at KXTV/ABC 10 in Sacramento. Investigations revealed three bullet holes in the station’s lobby window, and the crime scene team collected projectiles found on-site.
Tegna, the station’s parent company, confirmed the incident, stating that while details remained sparse, all the staff were safe.
Following the attack, authorities arrested Anibal Hernandez Santana, charging him with multiple firearm-related offenses, as well as discharging a weapon. Santana was released on bail but was soon taken into federal custody by the FBI, facing further allegations.
If convicted, he faces possible severe penalties, including a five-year prison term for violations related to firearms near schools, along with a substantial fine.
The district attorney for Sacramento County suggested that the shooting might be politically motivated, although the link to the Kimmel controversy remains unclear. Social media accounts linked to Santana exhibit a pattern of liberal views and anti-Trump messages.
In a tweet on September 18, Santana expressed a desire for drastic change in leadership, while previous posts conveyed sentiments concerning political figures, further detailing his controversial views.
As the dust settles, it seems Disney’s decision to suspend Kimmel’s show may have been precautionary, aiming to diffuse a tense situation arising from recent events. “We made this choice to avoid intensifying emotions at a sensitive time,” the company noted, adding that a return to programming was anticipated shortly.
