How to kick off March.
Auburn and Kentucky fans may have lost their minds on Saturday afternoon. This isn't just because the first Tigers defeated the 17th Wildcats, 94-78.
Unfortunately, fans who had seen the highly anticipated clash on ABC missed most of the final 12 minutes of the game after the broadcast lost both the photos and audio on the channel late, cutting first to a blue screen and then to a commercial break.
Following an uninterrupted commercial for about 7 minutes, The network sent updates “For those watching at ABC, they have technical difficulties within Rupp Arena. We want to inform Texas Tech and Kansas until Texas Tech and Kansas understand things here.
Only ABC showed fans no other college basketball games, but rather a pre-game show in the scheduled Bruins Penguin NHL game set to follow the showdown between Auburn and Kentucky at the opening time of 3pm.
The Bruins and Penguins game began without switching to college games.
Shortly after the game began, Kentucky Sports Radio's Matt Jones reported that broadcast issues had arisen from “major technical issues” involving trucks brought to the Kentucky game by the ABC team.
“Outside of the ABC TV truck Rupp Arena, it is said that there have been major technical issues and all of the power has been lost.” He wrote to X. “I'm trying to find backup power now, but I don't know if that will happen before it's finished.”
Around 3:30pm, ESPN I posted my own update When stopped.
“Programming update: #NCAAMBB on @Auburnmb's ABC broadcast on @kentuckymbb has experienced technical difficulties. The NHL is currently ongoing with ABC,” the post read.
Within the arena, no judges were able to conduct official reviews due to halt, Lex18 reported.
The broadcast then resumed on ESPN News, with only 2:23 left in the game.
“Well, we want to welcome everyone here,” Shulman said. “We know we've been away for a while… This is what happened. The generators here at Rupp Arena set on fire. So, first and foremost, it forms what we understand, everyone is fine, but obviously it has knocked us into the air for a long time. We've come back.”
Thankfully, for fans who missed most of the second half, they didn't miss the crucial one that led to the outcome of the game.
Auburn was leading 68-52 when the feed crashed. And it kept that established lead the rest of the way, leading to some jokes on social media.
“Auburn is defeating Kentucky badly. Written by one user.
“Kentucky really says, “Y'all has never seen us lose to Auburn in this building in 37 years. You're not going to see it today either.” Another person wrote on x.
Sports reporter Rick Bozich for WDRB in Louisville said the fans are owing a huge apology.
“ESPN/ABC owes a king-sized apology to Kentucky fans.” He wrote on x. “Because A&M-Vandy missed the first 12 minutes or more of the Oklahoma game on Wednesday and ran for a long time. Now they're getting the NHL pre-game show as they're missing the end of the Auburn game. Error Ball.”
ESPN issued an official statement after the match.
“An unusual accident has caused the Rupp Arena generator to burn, resulting in us losing power and as a result we are knocked down from the air,” the network said. According to Lexington Herald leader. “Thankfully, no one was hurt on the scene. We apologize for the impact of the fans watching on ABC during the second half.”
Auburn has not won the game at Rupp Arena since 1988.
Saturday also marked the Tigers' first victory over the Wildcats since 2022.
