Abdul Carter misses Giants practice because of an unforeseen calf injury

Abdul Carter’s Injury Update

Abdul Carter’s impressive performance might be at risk due to a calf injury.

The linebacker sat out Wednesday’s practice with the Giants after developing this unexpected injury, which wasn’t evident during Sunday’s game.

Over the last two games, Carter has made significant contributions, tallying eight tackles, 12 pressures, and a sack. However, he now faces the possibility of ending his streak of 22 consecutive games played since starting his career when the Giants take on the Saints this Sunday.

“He’s doing very well,” said head coach John Harbaugh, though his tone was somewhat ambiguous.

The team has been leaning heavily on Carter, as he has participated in 92.2 percent of defensive snaps across five games, which seems a bit risky.

Can this level of usage continue?

“He would probably say yes,” noted outside linebackers coach Charlie Bullen. “He’s young and he doesn’t get tired. As a coach, we have to keep the long-term focus in mind and take something off of him.”

Several other players were also unable to practice, including RT Jermaine Eluemunor (calf), LT Andrew Thomas (groin), CB Colton Hood (concussion), and S Tyler Nubin (neck). Meanwhile, TE Theo Johnson (neck), WR Darnell Mooney (neck), Greg Newsome II (groin), and S Jason Pinnock (concussion) had limited participation.

On a different note, the J.J. McCarthy Package has been introduced as a change of pace strategy, which Harbaugh appreciates. McCarthy took over for Jameis Winston for five snaps against the Commanders, although two were nullified by penalties.

“What you saw is probably not all we have for him right now,” said Harbaugh. “I mean, why not utilize all the talent we have? We’re always looking for ways to leverage our players’ abilities to win games. It would be irresponsible not to.”

In terms of turnovers, the Giants have accumulated nine fumbles, with four lost, tying for the sixth highest in the league.

“It’s been a major point of emphasis from day one, but we still need to do better,” Harbaugh admitted. “The number of fumbles we’ve had is way above what it should be, and we’re treating it very seriously.”

Since Tyler Shough became the starting quarterback for the Saints last season, 2022 first-round pick Chris Olave has emerged as a top receiving talent in the league.

“Those two have established a solid connection,” Harbaugh pointed out. “[Shough] has really excelled since taking over, but being a young quarterback does present its challenges. Still, he’s doing a fantastic job.”

The Giants have also made a roster change, signing OL Josh Gesky to the practice squad and releasing DL C.J. Ravenell.
