Here are some observations from the Giants’ preseason win over the Jets:
– Rookie Abdul Carter had a less impactful performance compared to his debut, despite seeing more action. His bright red sleeves stood out, but it was evident he has room for improvement.
During a key moment in the second quarter, he struggled against offensive tackle Chukhumaokolafo, which highlighted his need for growth.
– Younger players must seize their opportunities, as they aren’t guaranteed. Rookie Beaux Collins has shown promise in training camp and had a chance to shine in his first game. The former Notre Dame player didn’t play in the opener against Buffalo due to physical issues, which was a setback.
In the game, he made an impressive catch, snagging an 80-yard touchdown pass from Russell Wilson.
– Cor’dale Flott stepped in at cornerback while Deonte Banks was sidelined due to an injury. Flott made a notable impact in the second defensive series by breaking up a pass intended for Garrett Wilson. He and Banks are competing for a starting position, and Flott’s performance may give him an edge.
– Elijah Chatman got a chance at defensive tackle with Dexter Lawrence out. Standing at 6 feet and 278 pounds, he may be smaller but possesses significant strength, having impressed enough last season as an undrafted rookie to make the roster. He even lined up as a fullback, blocking effectively for Tyron Tracy Jr. on a key play.
– Dante Miller is making a case for himself on the team. The backup running back contributed on special teams and displayed his speed with four catches for 43 yards. His nickname, “Turbo,” does seem fitting.
– Jalin Hyatt had a challenging training camp and found himself under pressure from others vying for roster spots. However, he finally connected on a 21-yard pass from Wilson in the first quarter, which was a much-needed boost for him.
– Veteran kicker Graham Gano was given the night off, and Jude McAtamney took over kicking duties, successfully making a 35-yard field goal.
– Evan Neal didn’t start but came in to replace Greg Van Roten during the third offensive series. He played a couple of series alongside the starting offensive line and faced some pressure that resulted in a hit on quarterback Fidarian Mattis.
Neal continued to play in the second half with the second team line, which included Marcus Mbou, Josh Ezedo, Austin Schrottman, and Stone Forsyth.
– Jameis Winston, despite working with the third team, held his ground and effectively rallied the younger players. In the third quarter, rookie Darren Cambre made a solid 34-yard catch. Winston capped his evening with a one-yard quarterback sneak, finishing the night with 111 passing yards on 11 completions.
