For now, the ongoing discussion is somewhat settled. Abdul Carter has opted to don the No. 51 during rookie camp, which seems to signal a nod to the tradition of Giants’ numbers—albeit he hasn’t yet officially retired any of the previous ones associated with the team. In recent seasons, other players like Azeez Ojulari, Kyler Fackrell, and Zak Deossie have also worn this number.
This choice doesn’t guarantee he’ll stick with 51 during the regular season; rookie camps are known for last-minute changes. It could imply that he’s aware of the legacy tied to the Giants and perhaps is trying to follow in the footsteps of earlier stars. Initially, the third overall pick was suggested No. 56, but after a bit of back-and-forth, Phil Sims even offered No. 11. Interestingly, it seems his family had a say in that number’s fate.
Interestingly enough, Taylor has mentioned that Carter’s desired number 56 might be off-limits due to its retired status. However, the Giants had previously unretired No. 1 when Ray Flaherty’s son permitted Malik Narvers to wear it last season.
As Carter faces some criticism regarding the situation, it highlights a topic that the Giants might rather keep under wraps. Having ranked 24th for yards last season, he joins a defensive lineup that definitely could use bolstering.
Kavon Tibode recently commented, encouraging Carter to rise above the noise surrounding the jersey number debacle. He remarked that challenges are just part of the game’s rhythm, suggesting it’s merely the beginning of a journey filled with highs and lows.
Now, it seems Carter might be ready to put this number issue behind him, looking to make a mark in Giants history with both 51 and 56.
