Controversy Surrounds Michigan Senate Candidate’s Views on Second Amendment
A progressive Democrat running for the U.S. Senate seat in Michigan is facing scrutiny after a video surfaced, showing him discussing the Second Amendment in a controversial light. The candidate, Abdul El-Sayed, who has aligned himself with prominent socialists, recently had this footage from his YouTube channel come to attention.
In response to inquiries about the video, Roxie Richner, a spokeswoman for El-Sayed, stated, “Mr. Abdul respects the Second Amendment and believes that access to health care is a right.” In an April 6, 2023, video, he mused, “What if we just tweaked the Constitution and changed the amendment to make it a right to health care instead of a right to bear arms?”
El-Sayed’s proposal suggests that replacing the Second Amendment with a health care right could lead to fewer deaths from gun violence and more lives saved due to better health services. In the same video, he stressed that emphasizing health care would promote saving lives.
Interestingly, he has a history of making claims that the Second Amendment applies primarily to regulated militias rather than individual citizens. In a video from May 26, 2022, which has been reviewed by various outlets, he argued that the Constitution’s provisions are meant to ensure the right to bear arms only as part of maintaining a well-regulated militia.
Despite his vocal stance on gun rights, El-Sayed has also called for defunding the police, which has created a noticeable contradiction in his positions. This contradictory stance, alongside his proposals, comes as he navigates his campaign amidst public scrutiny.
It’s worth noting that a Supreme Court ruling in 2008, District of Columbia v. Heller, affirmed that the Second Amendment protects individual firearm ownership rights independent of militia service.
As of now, El-Sayed’s campaign has not clarified whether his views on the Second Amendment have shifted since he posted the controversial videos in 2022 and 2023.
Additionally, some of the other hidden videos reveal a range of topics that El-Sayed spoke against, including President Donald Trump’s border policies and even his opinions on celebrations like fireworks. His campaign has attracted attention due to his association with figures like Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, known for radical views linking capitalism to violence.
