Michigan Democratic Party Upset Over Rally with Controversial Anti-Israel Streamer
Abdul El-Sayed, a candidate for the Michigan Senate, has drawn criticism for sharing a stage with Hasan Piker, a streamer known for his anti-Israel sentiments. Piker has made inflammatory remarks in the past, including a claim that “America deserved 9/11.” This controversy has raised alarms among Democrats, with FOX News contributor Miranda Devine arguing that El-Sayed’s association with such individuals normalizes extremist viewpoints. She is particularly concerned about the unverified influence Piker wields online and his anti-American rhetoric.
In a blog post from 2021, El-Sayed compared Donald Trump’s actions during the January 6 Capitol riot to the acts committed by Osama bin Laden on 9/11. He advocated for holding Trump accountable in the same manner the nation did after the September attacks, suggesting a moral and constitutional obligation to act against the former president.
“Twenty years ago, while in middle school, I witnessed the second plane strike the Twin Towers from my chemistry class,” El-Sayed recalled, pointing out how the events of January 6 invoked memories of that day for him. He drew parallels between bin Laden’s recruitment of the 9/11 hijackers and Trump’s influence over the Capitol rioters. In his view, Trump’s actions amounted to “an act of terrorism,” warranting impeachment and exclusion from future office.
El-Sayed stated, “Yes, Donald Trump deserves to be impeached, just as he deserves to be convicted and disqualified from running for office again.” He emphasized that all members of Congress ought to uphold the values of democracy enshrined in the Constitution.
After bin Laden was killed in 2011 by U.S. Navy SEALs, El-Sayed argued that accountability was essential in sending a clear message about the repercussions of attacking the nation.
El-Sayed’s campaign has faced scrutiny about his controversial comments and activities in the lead-up to his primary against Rep. Haley Stevens. His appearance alongside Piker, who has previously made provocative statements, sparked significant backlash. Although El-Sayed condemned Piker’s comments, he resisted calls to distance himself from the streamer, describing such pressure as “cancel culture.” Now that he is the Democratic nominee, Republican groups are seizing the opportunity to attack him, investing heavily in advertisements that seek to link him to Piker’s extremist views.
In defending his actions, El-Sayed stated that associating with Piker does not equate to endorsing his past comments. He maintained that the message to be communicated is clear: attacks on American democracy must have consequences.
Critics have also suggested that El-Sayed is trying to obscure his previous statements by erasing online content as he campaigns for Senate, suggesting he aims to mislead voters ahead of the election.
